I'm Andre Young

Senior Software Engineering Manager

{{age}} years young, husband and father, code addict.

Hello, My Name is Andre.

Andre Young, {{age}} years young, born and raised in the Washington D.C. metro area. Highly motivated senior software engineering manager and tech lead with over {{yearsOfExperience}} years of development experience.

As of April 2020 I started a new job with Capital One. Very excited to be joining an awesome team doing awesome work!

Formerly I worked at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, where I spent most of my time crafting and working on cool (and sometimes important but not so cool) projects.

I also ran a bi-weekly developer meetup at NASA, where we discussed various development topics ranging from code architecture to knowing how to say "No" to a customer and having them say "thank you" afterwards.

I love development, love learning and sharing the things I've learned with anyone willing to listen. See my resume and other interests below.

My Latest Work

Most of my work is proprietary but I'm looking to expand my open source portfolio soon. Stay tuned!

What I'm Doing

I love what I do. I take great pride in what I do. And I can't do something halfway, three-quarters, nine-tenths. If I'm going to do something, I go all the way.

1. Strategy

I've been told that one of my strongest points is my ability to sit with a customer, understand their requirements and offer meaningful suggestions. Key to a good strategy is the collaboration that comes from active listening and empathy.

2. Architecture Design

The best stategy can fail without a good architectual design and execution. I've designed a number of successful systems and even a few unsuccessful systems. With each new deisgn a learn more.

3. Web Design

For customers and end users the user interface (UI) is the application. A great architecture can be overshadowed if the UI and user experience has not been thought out users will not get the value.

4. Group Leadership

I have lead a bi-weekly developer group since late 2012. In order to bootstrap that group I have presented at roughhly 80% of those meetups and mentored several other developers.

5. Development

I am currently developing several applications. My development stack of choice includes JavaScript, Angular.JS, and BootStrap on the front end and ASP.NET (Web API C#), SQL Server and Redis on the server side. I am also working on an application using Node.js and TypeScript

6. Consulting

In my career thus far I have not done any consulting but I am looking for opportunities to expand into new horizons. If you like what you see and think I can help you acheive your short or long term goals please reach out.

My Strengths

Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.

Personal & professional recommendations are often the best way to find out about the true person.
Here are a few words people have to say about me.

ARSC Inuteq (NASA)

"Andre is a great communicator and problem solver. He is the type of person you want to put in front of your customers."

Colleen Ponton
Integrated Program Team Lead

ASRC Inuteq (NASA)

Andre has done a wonderful job leading the development team and encouraging them to grow in their knowledge.

Steve Padgett
Program Manager

ARSC Inuteq (NASA)

Andre is a true mentor, he practices the different ways of being a mentor, one on one, distance and group. Andre serves as the alternate integrated program team lead manager for the PAAC contract in Code 480. Since taking on this role Andre has become a very involved and valued mentor to all in 480. He takes the time to listen to the problems, suggest solutions and mentors one on one to find solutions. His close guidance in furthering skill development for his mentees not only led to increased job satisfaction, but also diversified the division’s skillset and improved work quality. He was able to do this and keep morale up as team members were slowly transitioned off due to tighter and tighter budgets. Andre ensured that team members were not oversubscribed and constantly communicated to check on them and see if he could help in any way possible. Andre saw a fellow team member at the center struggling and taking 12 hours to complete a task, he took the initiative and asked to help review the task and due to the mentoring and collaboration he was able to get the 12 hours reduced to 6 seconds this would not have been accomplished without his skillful technique and approach to mentoring and coaching. The team members’ management was concerned about the performance of the individual and with Andre helping and stepping in the confidence and work product of the individual was recognized and applauded for the short turn around. Andre also serves as a functional lead for application development on the PAAC contract. He makes it a point each year to reach out and pair with each programmer to learn his/her skillsets and offers ideas on how to grow in coding and how he can help the developers meet the goals that they set forth. He also runs the very popular application development meeting at the center for all application developers, security personal, system administrators or anyone that is interested in coding every other Friday. He uses this meeting to help teach other developers and collaborate/mentoring to give each developer a glimpse of different ways to go and solve a problem. This mentor venue itself has gathered a community of nearly 45 different developers from across center to regularly attend and offer ideas. Andre’s greatest accomplishments is communicating, providing thoughts and ensuring that all he comes in contact with have easy access to the tools, the community, for them to do their job and grow as a person for this Andre Young is truly deserving of the Flight Projects mentor award.

Dev Group Sessions

Attending developer meet ups are a great way of expanding your knowledge and skills. But many of us have family and other obligations outside of work so I created and hosted a bi-weekly NASA wide developer group that ran for over 8 years. Below are an excert from those sessions.
